Motor racing is one of the most popular sports. And though it is certainly not the sport of choice in Europe, auto racing actually began in France in the late 19th century. In fact, the first race was held shortly after the advent of petrol-fuelled vehicles in 1894.
A few years later the sport made the leap to the United States where it became an almost instant success, especially in the Midwest. But if you ask five different racing fans why they follow the sports, you are likely to get five different answers.
Some folks appreciate the skills gained though driving experiences , probably because people like fast cars. Probably for the same reason they like roller coasters, at least for the first time. They are fast, scary and unpredictable.
Perhaps that is why some consumers, mostly men, are willing to pay a substantial premium for fast cars. According to recent numbers, sports cars cost an average of thirty percent more than regular cars. They are also much more expensive to insure than pedestrian vehicles.
Why do men like them? Well, for one thing they are faster and often much more aesthetically appealing than ordinary vehicle. Then there is the female factor. That's right! Study after study has shown that women are more attracted to men who drive expensive vehicles, especially sports cars. Now, how sad is that?
